Ceiling Fan & lights courtesy of Kichler lighting

This house is coming together y’all! If you’ve been a reader of my blog or have followed me for a minute then you know I’ve been renovating this house little by little. I have big plans for our first real home. More on that later but we plan to paint the brick, add shutters, take down all blinds, remodel our bathroom, change out the big entry lights and finish out our bonus room among other things. I’m gonna be one tired mom. Since we are preparing our house to be listed in the future, light fixtures are a top priority when someone views a house, especially in the bathrooms and bedrooms. (See how I updated our bedroom decor on a budget for spring) It can have a negative impact on potential buyers when the fixtures are outdated. So what is on the agenda right now? Well you guessed it…we just replaced our guest bathroom lights and put a ceiling fan in our guest room. While I was trying to figure out what type of lighting to get in the guest room, I thought to myself “What would really make my guests happy?” Then I remembered every time we are out-of-town my husband either requests a ceiling fan or buys a baby fan.

With the being said, is the ceiling fan out of style? I mean honestly I could care less if they are because HELLO, we live in the south. You don’t know a hot summer night until you live here. Especially like the type our A/C went out for 2-3 days. My fans SAVED this pregnant girls life during that event 2 years ago. Ceiling fans in bedrooms make a huge difference in conserving your a/c. My advice would be to opt for a modern version to keep it trendy.

We recently picked one out from Kichler lighting. It looks like an airplane propeller & it’s pretty darn cool looking. It is so sleek and we opted for the brush nickel style since we use a lot of black & white in our guest room. It comes with a remote so you can turn it on and off from the bed. (game changer, right?) Our ceiling are low and it looks great as you can see but it would pop so much with higher ceilings.

Fun facts about ceiling fans

  • They’re ideal in winter. Wait what? Winter? Doesn’t;t that sound counter productive? Nah, because they actually help to evenly distribute and circulate air that’s in the room.
  • They are used for heating. So what they do is help to facilitate heating in the room. You just have to change the direction of the blade. In the summer, blades run counterclockwise to chill the room and it’s pretty typical. To help enhance the heat in the room, run the fan clockwise direction. As the blades move they draw in air from around the room and push it up towards the ceiling. The force then pushes the air towards the outer edges of the walls then back down again. Since heat rises the entire room appears warmer since the air was pushed down. Repeat, repeat. Cool huh? Yeah I like that science stuff too sometimes.
  • They help conserve energy. Did you know you can save up to 15% on heating costs when you run a ceiling fan? Since it is improving the heat distribution you can actually turn down the thermostat, therefore consuming less energy without a heater.
  • A few things to remember when using a ceiling fan… do not leave it running continuously. It won’t distribute the heat if it’s constant.

In addition to the ceiling fan, we replaced our hideous bathroom lights in the guest room and Keatyn’s bathroom. I mean they were bad, especially Keatyn’s. We couldn’t even find bulbs for her old one it was so outdated. Old news though because now those bathrooms are LIT. Get it? No, ok well I think I’m funny. I did a brushed nickel light in K’s bathroom to tie in the soft pinks. In the guest bathroom I did 2 antique brass light fixtures because y’all know I have to mix the silver and gold. I refuse to be stuck in the box by just one of them when I love them both. I guess that’s why my style is eclectic. Both lights are also from Kichler, pretty much like most of my house now. Now, I hire an electrician to do all of this because unfortunately my handy-dandy father doesn’t live close by but you can change your own light fixtures if you know what you’re doing.  My goodness, they’re so pretty. I used to hate walking in those bathrooms and looking at the lights. Now I just stop to admire them sometimes. You can see my post on inexpensive bathroom makeover ideas here.

Well I hope you feel as educated as I do now about ceiling fans. I’m a wealth of information and can’t wait to share with my hubs when he gets home. Make sure to check out Kichler for some pretty sweet looking fans.
