How to Completely Transform Your Patio Using Drylok Concrete Paint

Hello everyone! Today I’m sharing How to Completely Transform Your Patio Using Concrete Paint! We just relocated from Nashville into a new home in the suburbs and are absolutely in love with it. Although, there are definitely a few changes and DIY projects that we started immediately in hopes to make it our own. Keep reading to see how our Patio Concrete Paint Transformation using DRYLOK, was a game changer for customizing our patio space!

It was already a beautiful home but it felt super basic and plain IMO so I had to spruce it up and make it our own. I think there are many things you can do to your home to update it or add some character that doesn’t have to break the bank. I loved our outdoor set up when we moved in but it felt a little “busy” to me. I just wasn’t a fan of the multi colored stone so I google “can I paint an outdoor patio?”

Can you paint an outdoor patio?

Ding, ding, ding. Plot twist, you can. It just has to be a specific paint, a standard masonry paint is not suitable to be applied to a concrete patio.

How do you paint an outdoor patio?

  1. Start with clearing out the patio, removing all furniture and decor off the patio. You’ll need a clear surface to work with so you can make sure your patio can be cleaned and painted evenly.
  2. Clean patio. Whether you decide to go all out and pressure wash or just sweep off debris and hose down.
  3. Depending on the surface material you may also want to clean the patio with cleaning products and a scrub brush.
  4. Do a test strip to see how the paint will hold.
  5. Pick a type of paint. So since you are painting concrete in an outdoor area, not just any paint will work. The typical exterior paint is likely to crack on a concrete surface and potentially peel off shortly after being applied. After my research I settled on Drylok Concrete Paint. DRYLOK® Latex Concrete Floor Paint is an all-in-one paint and primer that is scientifically formulated to protect and decorate interior and exterior masonry floors. One of the things I loved most of it is that it is a paint and primer all-in-one! It was super easy to have applied and is ideal for patios and outdoor walkways. Ive seen it used on garage floors also.
  6. Pick a color. I was trying to make things cohesive and flow and decided to modernize the back yard area so I opted for grey. You can also have this Drylok paint tinted as well. I would make sure to get accurate measurements so you know how much you will need.

Make sure to read the directions thoroughly because you do mix it with water, a step I realized my painters missed on the first coat which ended up costing time and paint. Also older concrete may need a tad more. You will wanna make sure both air and surface temperatures are 50°F or higher. Allow the first coat to dry for 4 hours prior to applying the second coat. I’ll never use anything else, it goes on so easily and dries extremely evenly. Everyone has loved it and it really ties it all together.
