So I’ll admit I am pretty good about balancing out the healthy and guilt foods now that I’m an adult. My kids…eh not so much. There’s like a radar that goes off when they know I’m trying to get them to eat something nutritious and not just a bunch of carb and starchy foods. I did however luck out that they both LOVE yogurt. What I have found as a mother is that if I steal healthy foods into other foods or make healthier hacks I can get them to eat what they need for a balanced diet. You’ll notice for the most part when I’m talking about recipes on my blog that it’s typically a healthy hack on a guilt free food that I’m posting. That’s because it’s natural to crave what’s bad for us but it’s also up to us to put good foods in our body and not take the easy route with junk.
I started this thing with my kids in the last couple weeks to get them onboard this “Healthy Hacks” train by implanting a DIY yogurt bar for dessert after dinner. Wait yogurt for dessert? Uh yes. I used to buy those yogurts you see with the M&M add ins but they still were consumed with so much sugar that I could’ve just eaten a dessert at that point. Just add your own ingredients and let them do it so they feel in control.
The other night when we did this I snuck a bite of Keatyn’s and she legit got so mad at me like I was stealing ice cream. I must admit it made me smile. This is how each member of our family eats our yogurt “sundaes”:
Keatyn : Granola, cacao nibs, rasberries
Charlie: Cacoa nibs, rasberries, strawberries, drizzle of honey
Me: (Give me it all) granola, nibs, berries and peanut butter
Matt: strawberries, granola, almonds, kiwi, touch of stevia
How do you make it fun?
- We set out a few FAGE Total 2% cups and a a larger 35.3 oz container of FAGE Total 2%.
- Make an array of toppings that are yummy but still health conscious ie. nuts, granola, berries, honey, nut butter, shredded coconut, raisins etc. It’s nice to have options and especially have both fruit and nuts etc to add both sweet and a crunch.
- Let each member of your family make their own and have a designated “dessert” bowl.
- Make a game out of how many healthy items they can put in the yogurt.
- Watch a tv show, play a game or read together while enjoying your “desserts” together and RELAX knowing you got your kids to actually eat yogurt for dessert ha.
When picking your yogurt make sure it has no added sugar like FAGE and only contains naturally occurring milk sugar, is high in protein, is an all natural greek strained yogurt, Non-GMO Verified, and preservative free. Another reason why we choose FAGE yogurt is that it is made with only milk and live active yogurt cultures and it’s gluten free. It’s extremely creamy and clearly you can tell by the consistency how high quality the yogurt is. It is pleasantly a balance between loose and thick enough to have some grit to it, Fage is subtly sweet but also has a slight tartness that I really enjoy. You can locate the stores that carry Fage here. The BEST part other than you know being healthy and all is that it still wows your family but the clean up and set up time are a breeze without the cooking/baking. Try it with your family and let me know what they think!
