Hello, Mommas! Let me start this off by saying do whatever works best for your family whether that be co-sleeping, staying in a crib or moving to a big kid bed. For those of you with infants, toddler’s, and little ones that are in transitioning phases, I’m giving you some tips and tricks for making them easier and fun! Particularly the transition to a “big girl/boy” toddler floor bed and the out of the crib (or out of your bed if they’re like mine) move. We all know how hard these steps can be to take, but they don’t have to be stressful. We can make it exciting for everyone involved, including the little ones! It has been such a joy for me watching my two girls go through different stages of life. I have truly cherished every growth moment with them both, the good and bad! Our children’s mental and physical growth is so important. It is our job as parents to broaden their horizons and open their brains up to ultimate imagination and safe age-appropriate independence.

Today I am sharing some killer Toddler Floor Bed Ideas that make this transition a project that you will look forward to! A number of the examples I included lead with the concept of the Montessori lifestyle.

You may be asking yourself – what exactly does Montessori stand for? Well, it’s simple! It is basically the concept that puts emphasis on independence, freedom of choice, and respect for the child. The idea of incorporating Montessori bedroom designs usually is meant for inspiring the design of a nursery or bedroom that lets your little one start to dabble in accomplishing tasks for themselves and explore an environment that is “theirs”.

A Floor Bed is great for integrating this concept as it allows the toddler to enter and leave the bed independently. I know this can sound like a scary step for some, but it is absolutely necessary for pushing your child in a direction that gives them a sense of personal identity and motivation. There are SO many safe and precious options available – most of which are simple designs that make for creating this space an enjoyable experience for everyone. I have included a variety of styles that suggest multiple styles as well as range between different budgets.

Why Should You Get A Floor Bed?

Floor beds are an easy transition from the crib to a bed for multiple reasons.

  • To start you don’t have to rush to their room when they wake up to get them out bed. Now they can get out of bed on their own and either play quietly in their room (make sure everything is secured to wall to avoid injuries) or come to your room for morning snuggles.
  • At night when they are struggling with sleep they can settle down on their own. Make a rule – you can stay up but have to stay in your bed – so that you can rest assured you’re giving them some independence yet you know they’re safe.
  • If your little one keeps climbing out of bed, the floor bed eliminates that danger of hurting themselves. Which is something I was extremely fearful of when Charlie was in her crib.

How Adjust To A Floor Bed

Keatyn adjusted to her own bed way better than Charlie which was so odd because Charlie was a better sleeper. Her crib was her safety net though. So to help her adjust it was pretty much a constant battle of redirecting her to her bed over and over. We also had to lay with her at night which was a hard adjustment since before we put her in her crib and that was that.

  • Keep the baby monitor in the room to make not only yourself feel safe but also let your child know if they need you to just say “Mommy, I need you” and you will come in. Stress that other than that they do not leave their bed because you need to know they are safe.
  • Be consistent. I need to take my own advice over here because trust me it can get frustrating. For us right now we have both kids in one bed until we remodel Keatyns room so it’s a bit of an adventure. With Keatyn I put her to bed and when she would come out of the room, I would place her back in her bed over and over (gently and calmly) until she realized this was where she was sleeping. If you give in and let them come to your bed, they know they’ve got you. As soon as Charlie and Keatyn are in separate beds I will be implementing this same strategy again. I would just sit outside the door so I didn’t have to walk up the stairs repeatedly. (Luckily I can watch our tv from the top of the stairs haha)
  • Here are some tools that help keep your kiddos in bed:

I really think floor beds helps not only alleviate stress in your routine and helps you take some of the stress out of constantly worrying about our kid’s safety. I hope you all enjoy and I can’t wait to see your thoughts! You got this Momma!
