The Ultimate Weekend Trip to Chattanooga: A Fun-Filled Family Getaway You’ll Never Forget

If you’re dreaming of a quick family getaway that’s close to home but packed with charm and adventure, a weekend trip to Chattanooga is exactly what you need. Just two hours from Nashville, this vibrant city is the perfect escape for families looking to explore caves, waterfalls, and scenic trails while still having time to enjoy amazing food and cozy, stylish accommodations. We recently packed up for 48 hours in Chattanooga and fell in love with it all over again — and I’m breaking down everything we did, where we stayed, and the best family-friendly eats to help you plan your own trip.

Why Families Love a Weekend Trip to Chattanooga
Chattanooga is seriously underrated when it comes to family travel. It’s walkable, welcoming, full of hidden gems, and offers that perfect mix of outdoor adventure and relaxed city vibes. Whether you’re hiking around rock formations, exploring an underground waterfall, or grabbing craft cocktails and kid-approved mac and cheese, this city just gets it.
We didn’t get to squeeze everything into this trip, but I’ve got to give a shoutout to two of our past favorites: the Creative Discovery Museum, which is hands-down one of the best kids’ museums we’ve ever been to (think hands-on fun + a break from the heat), and the Bluff View Art District, where you’ll find cobblestone streets, quaint coffee shops, and beautiful galleries overlooking the river. Definitely add them to your list if it’s your first visit!

Where We Stayed: The Hotel Chalet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo
Let’s talk about where we stayed — because it was one of the highlights of our weekend trip to Chattanooga. We booked a room at The Hotel Chalet at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, and WOW. It’s a total experience. Located in the heart of the city, the hotel blends nostalgic charm with modern style, giving off cozy retro vibes with updated finishes. Think velvet headboards, rich wood accents, and vintage design touches that feel both elevated and welcoming.
The grounds are super walkable with charming courtyards, a seasonal pool, and a cute café feel that makes mornings feel extra special. We loved being just steps away from shops, restaurants, and some of the best local attractions. Plus, if you dine at their on-site restaurant, Elsie’s Daughter, you get a hotel guest discount — which is always a yes from me!

What We Did (and Loved!) in 48 Hours
▸ Ruby Falls
We spent over an hour exploring the caves at Ruby Falls, and it was honestly the coolest part of the trip — no pun intended. The caves go 260 feet underground, and the path winds through narrow formations and textured rock walls that feel like something out of a movie. It’s all guided, so you learn fun facts along the way, and there’s quite a bit of walking involved (comfy shoes are a must!).
At the end of the trail is the breathtaking 145-foot underground waterfall, lit up in color-changing lights — it’s truly magical. The kids were in awe, and it’s one of those experiences you’ll talk about long after you’ve left. Strollers aren’t allowed, so plan accordingly, but it’s totally worth it.

▸ Rock City Gardens
Another must on your weekend trip to Chattanooga is Rock City Gardens on Lookout Mountain. Even though the Incline Railway was closed due to recent weather, Rock City more than made up for it. You’ll walk through beautiful trails, over swinging bridges, and under massive rock formations — there’s even a whimsical gnome village and the famous “See Seven States” viewpoint.
There’s a lot of climbing and stairs, so it doubles as a workout (especially with kids), but it’s super scenic and peaceful. One tip: bring bug spray! Near the top rail, we ran into a bunch of mosquitos, gnats, and flies — totally manageable, but good to be prepared.

▸ Chattanooga Choo Choo District
Even if you’re not staying at The Hotel Chalet, the Chattanooga Choo Choo District is worth walking around. There are old train cars, cute courtyards, and often live music or pop-up events. It’s nostalgic, fun, and a great spot to wander with a coffee while the kids burn off energy.

Where We Ate: Our Favorite Food Spots in Chattanooga
▸ Elsie’s Daughter
Attached to The Hotel Chalet, this restaurant gave cozy, elevated diner vibes — and the food was delish. Plus, you get a discount if you’re a hotel guest, which made it even sweeter.
▸ Stir
This one never misses. Bright and modern with amazing cocktails, craft ice, and a menu that kept both the adults and kids happy. Their lunch options are fresh and creative — one of our go-to spots.
▸ Public House
Okay, honesty moment — this one didn’t knock it out of the park for me food-wise, but the vibe was super cute and the mac and cheese was a HIT with the kids. So, it still earned a spot on the list.

- Community Pie – Pizza + gelato = automatic yes
- Main Street Meats – For foodie families or a casual date night
- Ernest Chinese – Still on my must-try list, but I’ve heard nothing but raves
