Rustic To Modern Kitchen Lights:
Isn’t it funny how often we change our minds regarding decor style? I have changed my style at least 2 times in the past 4 years of living in our home. I blame the creative mind. My style is constantly evolving. I loved our last kitchen lights don’t get me wrong but as soon as I phased out the rustic decor phase it just didn’t fit with my current theme. I opted to replace them with modern kitchen lights so that just in case my style happened to change before we move, it wouldn’t involve me changing the lights again.
You know if you’ve read my home related posts before that we moved into a short sale home that needed a lot of work when we moved in. Little by little we have put time and money into these home improvements to not only make our house a home but to also help the property value when we sell. Today I’m talking about our kitchen. Giving your kitchen lighting a makeover is a great investment. Not only can it give your kitchen a fresh look but it can improve the light quality and efficiency. I saw a quote the other day that I absolutely adored, “the kitchen island pendant can be the jewelry of the kitchen”
But how do you know if you’re choosing the correct pendant lights for your kitchen area? I have been that same overwhelmed person before when browsing through the multiple options online because they come in so many forms and different decorative styles you just don’t know which one to choose. My advice would be to figure out where you’re wanting the most light and the style you’re looking for. In my case I needed it above my kitchen table most for dinner time and homework with the kids. For us personally we get a lot of natural lighting in our kitchen space because of where the sun rises and sets. So I chose for that pendant over our table to be brighter. If you are someone who wants a lot of bright light you should make sure that you’ll be pleased with the amount of ambient lighting it gives off. We also only rely on those lights in our kitchen considering we have no pot lights in our ceiling.
So depending on what your needs are you need to decide between these 4 types of lights: task, ambient, accent and decorative.
Task: this light is for pendants to help you create more light for specific tasks and you will want the fixture to aim downward with an open bottom lightbulb.
Ambient: this is a general lighting that focuses on the entire room or area as opposed to task lighting which targets a specific spot. If you’re wanting to brighten your entire room also consider using multiple lights to spread across the area.
Accent: accent lighting is used to accentuate a painting or art piece in your home. Or even highlighting a countertop.
Decorative: aimed to highlight certain architectural feature or a design element needs to be highlighted. It’s different from task lighting, its role being mainly aesthetic.

We love the kitchen makeover. I will give one small piece of advice…make sure to pay attention to measurements and weight because we did have to get a new ceiling box to accommodate one of the lights since it was heavy. Overall we are IN LOVE with our new kitchen. Only thing left to do is add the backsplash and we are set 🙂
