Holiday Photo Outfit Ideas

Now that Thanksgiving has wrapped up and we’re all ready for the happiest time of year.. tis’ the season to smile! It’s holiday family photo time. As I’m sure you all know, coordinating family outfits for any sort of photo shoot can be stressful. Finding the right colors, trying to be trendy, opinionated and picky children and husbands (we gotta love ’em)… it can all make for success or disaster when trying to organize the outfits. From my experience, I’ve learned that it’s easiest to keep it simple! I think it’s important for each family member’s personality to shine through in their outfit choice. Depending on if you’re doing a more casual shoot or fancy you’ll want to consider a few of these different elements:

  1. Choose a seasonal color pallet (in the case of the holidays, typically you’ll stick to reds, greens, winter blues, and neutral colors)
  2. Coordinate these colors but you don’t necessarily have to “match” completely.
  3. Consider your home decor. If these photos are going up in your home on a big canvas, you’ll want it to sort of go with the aesthetic of your decor! For example: if you have pops of burnt orange in your home furniture or decor, you’ll want to think about including this color or complimentary colors in your outfit choices
  4. Think about fun/festive accessories or props that you can include in your photos. It always turns out more natural and candid when you have pieces that you can bring live action out in the photos. Ie. leaves, snow are perfect accessories of nature when shooting outside.
  5. Plan ahead and most of all, HAVE FUN! A big part of the fun of taking family photos are the memories that come from it. Instead of making it so serious and putting pressure on the photos to be perfect, find glory in the messiness of it all. After all, we are doing everything in true 2020 fashion this year.

I have compiled a simple outfit guide for your Holiday Family Photo Outfits 2020. My family usually likes to keep it simple, classy, and traditional! Although you can take these five tips and apply them to whatever speaks to your families style. Stores like J Crew, Anthropologie, GAP, Old Navy, and Target all have some great coordinating family outfits! I have to mention for good measure that Janie and Jack has some of the CUTEST holiday outfits for the little ones – definitely worth checking out even if you just sit there wishing that they made the clothes in adult sizes! Enjoy and happy holiday photo sessioning 🙂
