It’s winter, it’s cold outside. There’s either no snow if you’re in the south or your sick of it if you’re in the north. What is there to do with the kids when they’re on break or home after school? Well, we craft in our family. Home made gifts by your kids make for the best presents for relatives, teachers etc for the holidays. These gifts will mean so much more than a random coffee mug because they’re made from the heart and by little hands. Plus it keeps them busy so it’s a win-win. I just throw down a table-cloth or something I don’t mind to get messy and let them go to work.
The other day while Charlie was napping, Keatyn and I headed to get some inspiration for holiday craft ideas at our local Dollar General because you just can’t beat their prices. First thing she picked out was a gingerbread house. We did the same thing last year. I have her a limit of $30 and let her go crazy. When we got home she begged me for days to start the gingerbread house. (They also have foam gingerbread houses) She was so serious about it this year and Charlie was serious about eating the candy ha. It was such a drastic difference from last year how meticulous she was about this house looking good. Each night I catch her sneaking a piece of candy from her treasured design.
We also let them make their own ornaments for their playroom Christmas tree. For $1 for two ornament and 3 markers, you just can’t beat it. Charlie had so much fun now that she’s able to join her sister in all the activities. There is something special to be said about allowing kids to create their own ornaments for their tree that gives them such a great sense of accomplishment and pride, especially when you let them hang up their artwork. Keatyn and Charlie’s playroom tree is full of handmade ornaments.
We also made some foam Santa ornaments. Make a memory this holiday season with our DIY Foam ornament craft kit. We also made our own wreaths to hang on the windows and both girls got the chance to make their own. We picked out a couple cute rustic bows and it was as simple as tying on the ribbon. (Don’t tell them that, they really think they made that wreath ha) The great thing about Dollar General and holidays specially is they have the cutest decor at a reasonable price. We got some of our decor land family tradition crafts last year there. Here is the post from last year! Keatyn also is obsessed with the window clings and loves to decorate our back door. WE let her go to town every holiday.
Since we were busy racking up good deals, we went ahead and got some cute little gift boxes for Keatyn to make goodie bags for her classmates for Christmas. She got a bunch of mini peppermints for $1 and we bought cookie mix to bake cookies for them, maybe add some m&ms. It’s such a cute idea for your kids to make their own little gift baskets for their friends and teachers. They can add a personalized note or drawing.
