This Halloween activities for families post is sponsored by Dollar General but as always all opinions are 100% my own.
2020 may be notorious for event cancellations but Halloween is not one of them; and that is a breath of fresh scare! October 31, 2020 can still be fun, safe and memorable.
My family is celebrating the Halloween spirit by ‘getting ahead of the carve’ shopping at Dollar General (aka DG), which in my opinion is the affordable Halloween Headquarters.
With all the digital coupons such as sales on name brand candy and a plethora of items under $5, including costume sets, I was able to stock up on quality Halloween-themed items for incredible deals. To make things simple, I downloaded the used the Dollar General app to shop, which made navigating the DG website that much easier.
My family is choosing to follow suggested CDC guidelines (btw- DG sells PPE Halloween themed masks or face coverings too!) and celebrate Halloween 2020 at home. A few ideas this ‘Hallo-queen’ came up with are as follows:
Halloween Activities for Families
- A Family At-Home Halloween Party
- A Halloween Costume Dance Party
- A Family Halloween Movie & Game Night
- Halloween Decorating the Backyard as a Family
Dollar General made being the ‘Ghostess with the Mostess’ possible, especially on the easily accessible app. For our Family Halloween Party, we decided to decorate the backyard with the endless options we found on the app. And decorate we did! I say, ‘Go big or gourd home’. My favorite DG decor buy was the sign that reads “Beware of Little Monsters”. But I was also partial to the cat skeleton or spider web candy bowls.
Dressing up for Halloween is exciting at any age. But seeing kids and dogs in costumes is what I live for on Halloween. My little monsters decided to go as a ladybug and fairy (some of the less creepy options at DG.) However, DG has so many fun costumes, accessories and makeup packs (*check out makeup tutorials posted on the DG website for inspiration) it was hard to decide on just one. But tutus, wings and wands were the most fitting for our family dance party- “The Houston Monster Mash Ball.”
My girls paired their costumes with large fuzzy bags to ‘trick-or-treat themselves’ to all the candy we got out of the DG variety bags filled with their favorite candies. Momma loved the “Hershey’s All Time Greats” bag while the girls favored the fruity mix in “Nestle Wonka Candy Mix-Ups” bag.
In addition to costumes and candy, we created an outdoor Halloween themed full spread for eating yummy goodies. Not only did I buy adorably spooky halloween themed cups, plates, napkins and a table cloth; but I found easy meals like bloody witch’s fingers or spooky shepard’s pie recipes directly from the DG website.
We rounded out the ‘fang-tastic’ day indoors with a ‘Halloween and Chill(s)’ kind of night. Our movie and game night consisted of a few friendly games of UNO and then cuddling up as a family with snacks to watch ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein’, all thanks to Dollar General!
If we all weren’t in food comas from ‘goblin candy‘ like a candy-eating marathon, we planned on looking at DG’s website to find fun Halloween crafts ideas. At least next year we will be more experienced “DG Halloweeners” and can plan our day to better fit in all the Halloween activities.
All-in-all I’d say our Halloween festivities were a success, regardless of the fact it was not our traditional kind of Halloween. Dollar General played a big role in creating new, fun Halloween traditions.
P.S. If I am ‘creepin it real’, as much as my husband and I enjoyed the festivities with the girls, we were really looking forward to ‘boos’ after the little ones went to bed!
