How to Encourage Children to Read with EPIC:
Back to school time! Get used to this content because I have a lot of it. From back to school snacks, to momma feelings, to dealing with bullies and my favorite learning tools. Last year when Keatyn started Kindergarten I immediately sensed her frustration when we had reading time. She has more of her dad’s brain type than mine, completely math proficient and english not so much. It’s honestly hard to teach someone who doesn’t learn like you do. Home work time has been quite the struggle for me with her. Matt does so well with her because they’re one in the same but he works so much that it’s typically me stuck with the duty. I’ve tried a lot of different things to make reading time enjoyable for both of us since we are required to ready one book a day at least. The truth is as much as I love most online book services, they just aren’t geared as much towards kids and the ones they do have aren’t interactive.
In a day and age with apps being more than accessible to children for games and watching other kids play (insert laughing face), Epic has really changed the game when they created an online resource for reading in 2013.
What is it?
Well, Epic is an award-winning subscription service that gives families and classrooms instant & unlimited access to over 25,000 books, videos and quizzes from leading publishers to help encourage children to read, learn and grow confidence in their reading skills. Studies have shown that reading at home significantly improves a child’s academic success during the school year and after.
How much does it cost?
Epic! is a subscription service and offers unlimited access to their growing library free for the first month and only $7.99 USD per month after your first month. You can download the app on the Google Play store or Apple app.
Classroom Advantage
Teachers can download it to utilize it in the classroom by assigning books and creating collections for the students. It is in 87% of U.S. elementary schools. It’s also perfect for homeschoolers (It actually won an award for best of homeschooling) and summers off. Trust me my child could’ve used that for a reading refresher this summer. I’ll admit we didn’t practice with her enough this summer and it definitely showed once we got back in school a few weeks ago. I will personally vouch for Epic! because we now use it on a daily basis for her reading and even my youngest loves to use it. I can assign her tasks and track what she’s reading, what she’s learning and how long she was using Epic.
If you have multiple children at different ages you can create up to 4 profiles with personalized recommendations based on their reading level and interests. It’s homework time my kids actually look forward to because since it’s screen time it feels like fun, not learning to them. We read multiple books (Keatyn’s favorite is the Discover Series learning about all of the different animals and weather) but also watch videos like Pink Fong which my kids consistently watch on YouTube kids. I feel so much safer with them watching videos on Epic! My youngest who is about to turn two watches her ABC videos while my oldest reads books and listens to audio books. For busy moms like me, it’s a game changer. I’m sure you can relate because when are moms not busy? It’s definitely been a program I can trust for my children and know that they are sincerely learning in addition to having fun. The best part for me is that there is a 30 day free trial. That way I could test it out a few weeks and see how I truly felt about it without making a commitment until I was ready. Also, you can cancel at any time.
