I don’t know about you but I clean my granite counter tops daily in our house, actually even multiple times due to my small humans in this house. What is the best way to clean granite? I’ve had them in our homes for years so luckily I know what to do and what not to do thanks to my Nana. Growing up with a contractor in my family end up teaching my so much about the different parts of our home. I have always paid special care to our granite, knowing I shouldn’t just wipe them down with just anything. My grandmother always let me help pick out all the materials that went in the homes she built and always made sure to educate me on the differences between it all. Granite has always been the one thing that everyone wants in their home. The quality of granite counter tops are unreal. If you move into a home without them, that’s one of the first things you want to upgrade because you know it ups the value of your home.

- Clean up spills promptly. Things like cooking oils, wine and coffee and acidic products like tomato sauce etc. could possibly stain the surface of granite. Especially things like grease or cooking oil often spill on the granite and do not get cleaned up properly and become overlooked. Unfortunately even when sealed if a substance remains on the surface for a long period of time it can leave a stain.
- Clean your granite with a specially formulated granite cleaner like this will keep it in its best condition while also protecting it. Some people use dish soap to clean the granite and that’s not recommended because it’ll eventually cause build up and dull the shine of the counter top. Generic cleaning products also are horrible for your granite. Ie. bleach, glass cleaner, degreasers eventually deteriorate the seal which will leave the stone more sensitive to stains, etching and dullness. If you don’t use the proper cleaning solutions for caring for your granite it’ll end up costing you way more in the long run to repair. What NOT to use: Bathroom cleaners, Vinegar, Ammonia, Lemon, Orange and the ones mentioned above. It is recommended to use manufacturer recommended cleaning products like Granite Gold. - Protect your granite. Use coasters to avid wine staining. Use trivets, hot pads, towels under hot pots & pans just to avoid a potential crack. A hot pot or pan can potentially burn the granite surface. Also avoid cutting fruits, vegetables etc. on the granite because obviously it’s not good for the granite but also for the knife.
- Seal your granite. Believe it or not, granite can be vulnerable to staining because of its penetrable material. It shows up as dark spots on the granite and can slightly look off. This can be prevented a majority of the time by using a granite sealer.
- Use a polish at least monthly to enhance the granite counter top’s shine. (Comparable to waxing furniture..it just gives it that protection and barrier)
With certain furniture or appliances in your home you can definitely take short routes around or the cheaper shortcuts in cleaning but something as precious as stone is not one of those times.
