I’m sure this won’t come as a surprise to most of you if you know me, but Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Sure the May flowers are nice and the Tennessee weather before the devil heat and humidity. What I really look forward to you may ask? SPRING CLEANING. Yup, I said it. I seriously genuinely enjoy it so much! There is something about the warmer weather and sunshine that helps you feel motivated and ready to start over. Spring cleaning and organization is a fantastic way to press the reset button after a long hard couple months of the very unfortunate “seasonal depression”. I know you Northerners may be laughing because we don’t endure near the Winter that ya’ll do, but I can’t help it! We’re big ol’ babies here in the South.

One of the spaces that is most difficult to accomplish this isn’t exactly inside the house… it’s the garage. I feel like almost everyone can relate to this. Have you ever been stuck with no choice but to leave your car in the driveway because your garage was too cluttered? You are full of it if you’re not raising BOTH hands in the air right now or just a way more organized person than I am. While we usually blame the issue on “having too much stuff”, it’s likely just that you aren’t using your space in the most efficient way. I am 1000% guilty of this! And we are not alone because it is estimated that only 30 percent of us store our cars in the garage. I have struggled with clutter issues in our garage for years. Because the garage seems out of sight and out of mind, it is so easy for us to slowly move miscellaneous object in there until until the whole garage turns into one big dumpster pile. I unfortunately let it get to the point of junky where I had no choice but to organize so I didn’t feel like a piece of trash, but where to even start? I’ll tell you with these garage organization ideas!

Here are some tips and tricks that were huge for helping me get started when the project seemed simply too large to tackle. Just take it a little at a time!

First of all, setting aside a dedicated day or weekend (depending on the severity) is a must. It will never actually get done if you just pick at it here and there, so make sure you pick an uninterrupted time to commit to it. My friend Kelly and I dedicated a Saturday and went until it was completed.
Second, it’s important to have your piles separated as well. Keep, donate, and sell/throw out piles. I pulled every single item from my garage out and laid them out separately in my driveway so it was out of the way while I set up organizational cabinets. As I pulled the items out I made piles as to what I was keeping, what I was donating and what I was getting rid of. I suggest immediately taking the trash pile to the dump that day and scheduling a donation pick up. Also sort the keep pile into sections and I suggest clear labeled plastic bins to separate out categories like picture hangers, gardening, nails, small tools etc. That way you can easily grab it and don’t have to sift through for an hour to find something. (Random tip try not to leave cardboard boxes in the garage as it attracts spiders)
Get garage cabinets or some sort of organizational method. I prefer the cabinets because they hid everything and I don’t have to look at it unless I open it up. These cabinets were EVERYTHING for making this space aesthetically appealing and effective. TRINITY Storage & Organization made it a piece of cake to complete this project. They are also assembled already other than adding the shelves inside which made it easy to put together so fast. I know where every single thing is in my garage now and for someone as chaotic as me, that’s a huge relief.
Try to keep as much as possible off the garage floor. Utilize cabinets and wall space. We found all sorts of wall storage to help keep the floor clutter free. (I’ll link everything we used below)
Epoxy the floor. Our garage floor is disgusting and there is paint spills everywhere. (yup that was me and Matt is still annoyed with me for it) An epoxy coating on the garage makes it look like brand new plus it helps the floor resist oil and cleans a lot easier than your regular garage flooring. You can hire that out for a few grand or attempt it yourself.
Use ceiling space if you’re able as well. (We didn’t do this but will on the next home) You can store seasonal stuff and items you don’t use often. Just make sure there is enough clearance with the garage door to open and close.
Another great tip for this project is that decluttering can also be a fun family/friend involved activity. You can talk, organize, and sip a delicious red or white with a friend or make it a game with the fam. I mean this sounds like an awesome Friday night to me! Turn on some music and vibe! Thats what Kelly and I did.

I don’t know about ya’ll, but organizing can be really soothing and relaxing. Once you get a system down and have real direction of what you’re trying to accomplish, you can get lost in the joy of it all! Now just make sure to KEEP IT CLEAN.
