It’s prime time to enjoy long summer nights outdoors here in Nashville and soon all over the states. Now that spring is here and we are finally getting such beautiful weather, we can start planning for hot summers, too. Do you enjoy being out in the sun during the summer or do you prefer summer nights? It gets so hot and humid here in Nashville so you never know if it’s an inside or outside type of day. It’s still good to be prepared for the moments you are outside though, right?
We just had a patio built in early winter and we FINALLY get to enjoy it. It has become such a fun space for my kids. We added a couple playhouses, a slide and honestly, I can’t get them to come inside now. I grew up in the country so I’m definitely no stranger to the outdoors, but my city girl ways now make me fear certain aspects of the outdoors, like bugs! I might sound dramatic but they genuinely make me want to stay inside. I feel like I can’t enjoy my fire pit and patio because of my fear of getting eaten up by mosquitoes. Tips to Enjoy Long Summer Nights
So how can you better enjoy your time outdoors this summer?
- Add protection from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are a huge problem in the south and dealing with them head on is vital if you want to enjoy the outdoors. First, make sure you don’t keep any standing water around but most importantly I keep mosquito repellent fuel filled in my TIKI Brand torches and table top torches scattered around my patio and deck. - Create an outdoor space to enjoy. If you’re someone who enjoys being outdoors, then adding on to your outdoor space might be of value. Adding a patio area or deck will also increase your house value when you’re looking to sell. We entertain friends often so it’s nice to have a dedicated space to grill out, roast marshmallows and let the kids play. You just have to ask yourself what type of space you’re looking to add. Are you wanting something quaint, like a smaller area for conversation or a dining area or a full set up to entertain guests? We have a larger area now so we have all three areas scattered around our deck and patio to give more options. Also, let’s talk about shade… Being outdoors is great unless you don’t have any shaded areas. A few options for shade include adding a pergola, a giant umbrella or planting a shade tree. Everyone will be a lot more comfortable and it will make the summer heat much more bearable.
- If you have space, add a fire pit. Some of my best childhood memories are of my dad building a fire pit, roasting marshmallows by the fire or just sitting around it. We recently bought an inexpensive fire pit and since then it has warmed up and we probably spend at least 1-2 nights a week there.
- Consider adding ambiance lighting. When dusk starts to creep in it can become hard to enjoy the outdoor area. That’s when lighting like string lights or patio lights comes in handy. I also add a few of my TIKI Brand table top torches on to our tables to help light the area and give it a warmer feel. My dad has a TV on his deck because it’s covered but ours is not so we decided not to get one. We do have multiple play areas for the kids and sprinklers to enjoy and have fun outside. We also have a ton of outside games to play with our friends. It all depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re just wanting a couple friends over for some drinks on the patio you won’t need to go all out, but if you’re like us and have large groups over often, you’ll definitely want to be prepared.
